Many of these devices communicate over <strong>LIN <\/strong>(Local Interconnect Network) a simple, deterministic serial bus designed for low-bandwidth automotive applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For engineers working in test and validation, LIN presents a unique challenge: it\u2019s easy to wire up but not always straightforward to automate, especially when diagnostic messages (UDS) come into play. Fortunately, <strong>NI XNET<\/strong> provides a unified way to manage both standard broadcast LIN communication and higher-level diagnostic protocols with minimal effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ni-xnet-hardware-setup-for-lin-communication\">NI XNET Hardware Setup for LIN Communication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the simplest test scenario, we have a PC based bus master and a device under test (slave device).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"549\" height=\"178\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093326\/lin-bus-1.png\" alt=\"LIN Bus\" class=\"wp-image-39144\" style=\"width:527px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093326\/lin-bus-1.png 549w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093326\/lin-bus-1-300x97.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The bus master is a PC connected to the LIN bus through an NI compactDAQ chassis, NI-9860 XNET module, and a TRC-8456 LIN dongle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093417\/bus-master-hardware-1.png\" alt=\"BUS Master Hardware\" class=\"wp-image-39145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093417\/bus-master-hardware-1.png 410w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093417\/bus-master-hardware-1-300x121.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-configuring-broadcast-lin-communication-in-labview\">Configuring Broadcast LIN Communication in LabVIEW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Configuring broadcast LIN starts by loading the LIN Definition File (LDF) into the NI-XNET Database Editor and assigning it an alias. For this example, we\u2019ll use an example LDF from NI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"149\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20115912\/alias-manager-2-1024x149.png\" alt=\"Alias Manager\" class=\"wp-image-39243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20115912\/alias-manager-2-1024x149.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20115912\/alias-manager-2-300x44.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20115912\/alias-manager-2-768x112.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20115912\/alias-manager-2.png 1530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the LDF is loaded, a simple VI can start communication with the Device Under Test. Here\u2019s what\u2019s happening in the below VI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create Input and Output Sessions\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These are RX (input) and TX (output) sessions for receiving and sending data to the Device Under Test.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On a test bench, it\u2019s often necessary to <strong>enable termination<\/strong> at the TRC-8456 and configure the PC as the <strong>bus master<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Signal Single-Point Sessions<\/strong> handle signals rather than raw frames, so there\u2019s no need to manually unpack frame data. \u201cSingle-Point\u201d means XNET maintains a current-value table of signals for both input and output.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The front panel controls <em>input signal list <\/em>and <em>output signal list<\/em> are linked to the database, providing dropdowns to select signals to read and write.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start Sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assert a Schedule\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Schedules are defined by the LDF, and the XNET controls will provide a drop-down to select a schedule to assert.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While Loop\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Continuously write and read signals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cleanup Logic\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stop and clear both input and output sessions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093459\/broadcast-example-block-diagram-1024x509.png\" alt=\"Configuring Broadcast LIN Communication in LabVIEW\" class=\"wp-image-39147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093459\/broadcast-example-block-diagram-1024x509.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093459\/broadcast-example-block-diagram-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093459\/broadcast-example-block-diagram-768x382.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093459\/broadcast-example-block-diagram-1536x764.png 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/14093459\/broadcast-example-block-diagram.png 1657w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-performing-uds-unified-diagnostic-services-over-lin-in-labview\">Performing UDS (Unified Diagnostic Services) over LIN in LabVIEW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UDS (Unified Diagnostics Services) is another common test engineering use case.
