{"id":21765,"date":"2019-04-08T13:40:25","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T13:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmcinfo.com\/blog\/21765\/young-women-learn-to-code-with-dmc\/"},"modified":"2025-12-23T10:21:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T15:21:12","slug":"young-women-learn-to-code-with-dmc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dmcinfo.com\/blog\/21765\/young-women-learn-to-code-with-dmc\/","title":{"rendered":"Young Women Learn to Code with DMC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This year, DMC took the opportunity to present at the 27<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Houston <a href=\"https:\/\/westharriscounty-tx.aauw.net\/activities-interest-groups\/eyh\/\"><strong>Expand Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics (EYH)<\/strong><\/a> conference at Spring Forest Middle School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-eyh\">What is EYH?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EYH is an event for middle school girls designed to nurture their interests in mathematics, science, and technology. Around 450 girls attend each year, and a typical day consists of four&nbsp;hands-on workshops in various STEM-related fields. <a href=\"\/contact\/dmc-houston\">DMC Houston<\/a> engineers, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmcinfo.com\/about\/employee-bios\/elizabeth-goodnight\">Elizabeth<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmcinfo.com\/about\/employee-bios\/maddie-drake\">Maddie<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmcinfo.com\/about\/employee-bios\/cecilia-brookshier\">I<\/a>,&nbsp;put together coding demonstrations to get them interested in programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/27161050\/Maddie-Ceci-and-Elizabeth.jpg\" alt=\"DMC houston girls\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fun-processing-demos\">Fun Processing Demos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After a quick ten-minute introduction to DMC and our backgrounds, the girls got to begin coding with a programming language called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=processing&amp;rlz=1C1GCEU_enUS819US820&amp;oq=processing&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60l5.1471j0j9&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">Processing<\/a>. Processing is an open-source graphical library, which makes it a great tool for teaching the fundamentals of computer programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first demo consisted of programming the proper sequence for a stoplight. The girls were given a template project that provided them with three functions: TurnOn, TurnOff, and Wait. They then had to use the functions in the proper order and with the correct arguments to simulate a stoplight. When done correctly, the program would run as demonstrated in the video below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/27161050\/Stoplight.png\" alt=\"Stoplight code\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/27161050\/Stoplight-Gif.gif\" alt=\"Stoplight\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The second demo utilized x-y coordinate systems to draw a house. The girls were given a template project that contained a partially completed house. It was up to them to draw the remaining pieces with the proper coordinates. The last step was to color in the image using RGB values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/27161049\/House-R.png\" alt=\"House Demo\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-take-home-usbs\">Take-Home USBs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After each session was over, the girls got to take home a USB that contained their stoplight project, their house project, and the Processing software. The goal was to encourage them to continue developing their programming capabilities outside of the EYH workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, the conference was a great experience, and hopefully, the girls enjoyed it as much as we did.
