{"id":15176,"date":"2024-04-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmcinfo.com\/our-work\/python-modbus-communication-for-environmental-monitoring\/"},"modified":"2025-09-08T15:57:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T20:57:11","slug":"python-modbus-communication-for-environmental-monitoring","status":"publish","type":"our_work","link":"https:\/\/www.dmcinfo.com\/our-work\/python-modbus-communication-for-environmental-monitoring\/","title":{"rendered":"Python Modbus Communication for Environmental Monitoring"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For this project, we used Modbus as a communication protocol and\u00a0Omega HX303C and OME-ET-7017 Ethernet I\/O modules to write a driver that collects live data within 0.1 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The OME-ET-7000 module requires the use of a&nbsp;jumper to switch from the default voltage to milliampere. The IO module uses Modbus reading input registers to store the analog inputs of the temperature and humidity&nbsp;within the 4-20mA range. This will match the detection range for the sensor (0-100\u02da C for temperature and 0-100% for humidity).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DMC used pyModbusTCP, which uses Modbus TCP protocols to get readings from the IO module. pyModbusTCP&#8217;s&nbsp;built-in method handles the address for registers when calling different methods. For this project&nbsp;we used&nbsp;input registers, which are stored by 0x04 address. pyModbusTCP automatically handled&nbsp;the addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"215\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/10102907\/Python-Modbus-communication-for-environmental-monitoring_1.png.webp\" alt=\"python modbus communication for environmental monitoring\" class=\"wp-image-36474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/10102907\/Python-Modbus-communication-for-environmental-monitoring_1.png.webp 215w, https:\/\/cdn.dmcinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/10102907\/Python-Modbus-communication-for-environmental-monitoring_1.png-150x150.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another feature of this driver is&nbsp;the ability to handle&nbsp;different channels&#8217; logging frequency within a module, as well as handle&nbsp;different IO modules. The program is developed to scale for other IO module brands, which could potentially use other communication protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the client required&nbsp;different sensors to have the ability to log the environment data under different frequencies, DMC used technology such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.python.org\/3\/library\/asyncio.html\" target=\"_blank\">asyncio<\/a>&nbsp;to allow different IO&nbsp;modules to work&nbsp;together.
