DMC implemented a vision system using four line scan cameras – two cameras acquire images of the products (4 per camera) before the package is\u00a0closed\u00a0and the other two cameras acquire images of the text printed on the\u00a0outside of the\u00a0packaging. DMC developed a LabVIEW program which runs\u00a0in Real-Time on the NI embedded controller\u00a0to\u00a0acquire, process, and inspect images from all four cameras.\u00a0 The images of the product were inspected to ensure proper size, shape, positioning, absence of foreign objects, and presence of marking text.\u00a0 The text on the package is inspected for size, position, density, contrast, and sharpness.\u00a0 The system is capable of running inspections at the maximum speed of the machine: 1440 products and packages per minute.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
The built-in FPGA on the NI embedded controller is utilized to count encoder signals, trigger the cameras, and initiate processing in the real-time code.\u00a0 After inspection is complete, results are sent to a PLC\u00a0via EtherNet\/IP communication so that the machine can reject\u00a0bad packages at\u00a0the end of the\u00a0line.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
A separate LabVIEW program runs on the Windows Touchscreen PC to provide the user with an interface to monitor and configure the vision system.\u00a0 A supervisor may enter a password to access and edit the recipe parameters that define the inspection criteria.\u00a0 This gives the system\u00a0the flexibility to\u00a0handle a variety of product types.\u00a0\u00a0The interface also calculates\u00a0rejection rate statistics (separated by failure mode)\u00a0and displays trend graphs to the operator, providing the operator with diagnostic information to help maximize yields.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
