The DMC Seattle team had an evening that you’d have to see to believe at the Museum of Illusions. After seeing some intriguing photos of the museum’s quirky exhibits and optical illusions, we decided to organize a team outing using the monthly Activity Fund budget for company-sponsored social outings. Little did we know the magic that was in store for us.

A Mind-Bending Experience

The museum is located a short walk away from DMC’s Seattle office, so we planned to visit it on a weeknight after work. We kicked off the evening by ordering dinner at the office to fuel up before our adventure. Then, a group of eight of us, including some of our guests, set out to explore the museum.

Our eyes couldn’t believe what we saw after arriving at the Museum of Illusions. There was a variety of optical illusions to interact with and pose for fun photos.  Some rooms made you feel like you were shrinking or growing while others played tricks on your eyes. Our team had a blast together trying to figure out how the illusions worked and snapping silly photos of each other.

One of the highlights of the outing was a tunnel at the end of the museum. It had a spinning circular wall that created a dizzying effect, making it tough to maintain your balance. People struggled to walk through it, with some of us nearly stumbling over as we tried to keep our footing through our laughter.

This Magic Moment

After regaining our balance, having our minds blown, and taking way too many pictures, we all made our way home. Our magical evening at the Museum of Illusions was the perfect way to embody DMC’s core value of “Have Fun.” It was great to enjoy the museum’s whimsy as a team and literally see things from a different perspective.

At DMC, our employees are not only dedicated to their professional projects but also bringing their personal passions into the workplace. One such example is how engineers have combined their love for LEGO, their work on the NASA BOLE (Booster Obsolescence and Life Extension), and the benefit of each office’s Monthly Activity Fund to create a unique and inspiring company culture.

The LEGO Enthusiasts

LEGO bricks are more than just toys; they are tools for creativity, problem-solving, and team building. Many DMC employees have been avid LEGO builders since childhood, and this passion has only grown in both the skill necessary to complete the project, and the price of the sets involved. The intricate designs and endless possibilities that LEGO offers align perfectly with the skills and temperament required for engineering and project management.

DMC employees create Lego NASA kits

The NASA BOLE Project

Just like LEGO’s, many DMC employees have followed NASA’s space program since childhood and were thrilled to work with NASA. The NASA BOLE project is a critical initiative aimed at extending the life of the Space Launch System (SLS) boosters. This project requires cutting-edge engineering, meticulous planning, and innovative problem-solving. DMC employees working on BOLE are at the forefront of aerospace technology, ensuring that NASA’s missions continue to reach new heights. Learn more about DMC's work on the NASA BOLE project.

The Monthly Activity Fund

DMC’s monthly activity fund is designed to promote employee team building. Employees can use this fund to organize activities that bring them joy and foster connections with their colleagues. A few examples of Monthly Activity Nights include sports events, Top Golf games, and cooking classes. However, a perennial favorite of DMC employees is LEGO night!

Our LEGO enthusiasts have creatively utilized the monthly activity fund to support their passion. They have organized LEGO-building workshops, competitions, and even collaborative projects where employees work together to build large-scale models. These activities have not only been fun but have also strengthened teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

A Unique Synergy

The combination of LEGO building, the NASA BOLE project, and the monthly activity funds for the St. Louis and Seattle offices have created a unique synergy at DMC. Employees are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work, blending their personal interests with their professional responsibilities.

At DMC, we believe that fostering a culture where employees can pursue their passions alongside their professional goals leads to a more engaged, motivated, and innovative workforce. The combination of LEGO, the NASA BOLE project, and the monthly activity fund is just one example of how we are building dreams, one day or brick at a time.

For the second time, our DMC Seattle office hosted a Yearly Office Event (YOE). Known as the SeaYOEttle, DMCers from across the country gathered to spend a long weekend in Cle Elum, Washington.

To make sure there were events for everyone to engage in, this YOE followed a choose your own adventure style, and there were many adventures to choose from.

Before the YOE

“The Seattle office people were good at finding fun stuff for us to do after work before everyone had showed up for the YOE,” Aaron Shoemaker, DMCer from Chicago who arrived early before the YOE. “We went to a taproom with a food hall on it, we watched the sunset out on the shore at one point, and it was just a really fun week.”

The Monday evening before the YOE included a picnic dinner in the park with the Seattle office for those who already arrived in Seattle.

“On Monday night we went to Lincoln park, a local park, and we had dinner, brought some beverages, and just watched the ferries,” Elizabeth Goodnight, DMCer from Seattle who helped plan the YOE, said. “I think it’s fun just sitting on the water in the sound watching the ferries go by. It’s one of my favorite spots, so we got to take anybody who was around to a little more of a casual night just hanging out and being friends.”

While the office was busy Tuesday with more DMCers arriving in Seattle (including me), we went to dinner at a restaurant in Pike Place Market also on the water. This was a bit more of a classic Seattle tourist staple.

On Wednesday we hit another classic Seattle tourist staple after work and went to Flatstick to play duffle board – a local game that is a mix between mini golf and shuffleboard.

Thursday – Let the YOE Begin

While working in the office on Thursday, Caroline Corbois from Houston and Michael Sidler from Seattle say they got to see the Blue Angels fly over as they were practicing for the weekend.

“We watched the Blue Angels performing over the office essentially from the lookout area at the top of the building and just around the Seattle area,” Michael said. “And we got to play pool with all of the Chicago people who came in.”

After some pool, the first group of DMCers headed to the cabins we were staying at in Cle Elum. We spent the night snacking on pizza, playing games, saying hi to people we haven’t seen in a while, and meeting DMCers we hadn’t met before.

Friday

Friday was when the choose your own adventures began. One group went on a moderate hike to Peoh Point in the morning – including myself.

Peoh Point hill
Peoh Point top
Peoh Point lookout

“We did a hike at Peoh Point, and that was fun,” Brian Sanderson, DMCer from Chicago, said. “We reached that peak where a couple of people went up and a couple of others did not. I think hiking is the one thing that is missing in Chicago. That’s why I was happy that Seattle was more of a hiking focus rather than walking around a city.”

Peoh Point group photo

Another group went rock climbing all day – a highlight for many people on this YOE.

“I used to be a climbing instructor, so it was really fun to get back out there,” Caroline said. “John and Kevin did a phenomenal job of planning a trip that was accessible for all skill levels. It was a super remote crag – no other climbers except two people at the very end. It was really nice to meet them and talk about local climbing. We were there for 9 hours.”

Seattle YOE climbing belaying

As hiking is not very easy to do around our other DMC offices, many DMCers say they enjoyed traveling and doing it at a YOE.

Seattle YOE climbing drone photo

“It was a lot of fun! I’ve done a reasonable amount of bouldering in the past and have only been outdoor climbing once before,” Nick Leisle, from San Diego, said. “It was a good chance to get back out there and climb a bit more. I also got to do belaying, which is something I’ve done a little bit before in the past, but I got to learn a little bit more about it this time around. I really can’t complain about spending an entire day outside around the side of a mountain. The place we went climbing was very beautiful. We had a very clear view of Mount Rainier. Just being out there with great weather, lying in a hammock, and hanging out with the homies is a good way to spend the day – can’t complain about that.”

Seattle YOE climbing mountain

Many DMCers reminisce about climbing as their favorite part of the YOE.

“I think my favorite moment was the first climb of the day just looking out from the top of the rock face, turning around, and seeing Mount Rainier in the distance,” Michael, said. “That was a lot of fun.”

A small group also checked out a beach in Cle Elum Friday afternoon!

Seattle YOE beach

After all of the climbing and the beach, we had a cookout for dinner where Phil Schaffer made the best burger I’ve ever had – and some hot dogs. Elizabeth brought up a bunch of berries from her property and convinced us to eat blackberry crumble, which did not take much convincing at all.

Saturday

Saturday morning was another choose your own adventure day with one group leaving at 4am to hike Colchuck Lake.

Seattle YOE early hike with Josh, Charlie, and Ronan

“Saturday morning, we got up really early, had three or four cars of people drive up to the Enhancements, and we hiked up to Colchuck Lake,” Michael said. “It was a slightly rainy day, so it fits in with what Seattle is normally like in the non-summer months. It was nice because it took away the heat, and it was a nice, shaded hike up to the lake.”

Seattle YOE early hike with Ryan and Aleks

With Colchuck Lake being one of the most well-known and visited locations to go hiking in the state, there were a ton of people there, according to Michael.

“There are absolutely incredible views,” Michael said. “Some people went and did some swimming in the lake when they got to the top, we enjoyed our trail mix and other snacks that we brought with us, took some pictures, and then headed back down.”

Seattle YOE Lake Ingalls group photo

For those who did not want to wake up early but had an itch to hike, they headed to Lake Ingalls.

“I went to Lake Ingalls with Kevin HsuRachel HughesJohn WilliamsNick LeisleMilos Popovic,” Caroline said. “Kevin and I made it a trail run, which was really fun because then we had time to run all the way around the lake.”

While Caroline and Kevin ran around the lake, everyone else in the group hiked Lake Ingalls, according to Caroline.

“The Lake Ingalls hike was beautiful,” Rachel said. “Being from Chicago, you do not get a lot of mountains, much less lakes in mountains. To be outdoors in that kind of scenery for that long is awesome.”

While the early birds hiked, another group of us went on a third adventure to explore the cute little town of Leavenworth, a Bavarian-styled village in the Cascade Mountains.

“Leavenworth was fun. They have really committed to the bit out there,” Aaron said. “It’s all a very German looking town. Even McDonalds, Starbucks, and Napa Auto Parts are all [written in] bohemian script. We went and did a beer tasting at a local brewery, and then we went to München Haus and got bratwurst, sauerkraut, and more beer – it was a good time.”

Following the trip to Leavenworth, a group of DMCers headed to the state park to play Bocci Ball and Uno, eat lunch, and taste wine!

Seattle YOE wine tasting

We did the wine tasting in our new DMC Seattle mugs, which was the SWAG gifted at this YOE.

Seattle YOE mug

Elizabeth was our Sommelier and presented us with Washington’s local wines to taste. Wine tasting is a Washington staple, according to Elizabeth, and she even gave a second wine tasting back at the cabins for those who went on the long hike and missed it.

Sunday

As we left Cle Elum and headed back to Seattle, the choose your own adventures continued. One car of DMCers stopped at a local coffee shop for breakfast in the town of Roslyn, Washington that we drove through. Another car stopped at Roslyn’s local farmers market and bought eight pounds of fruit to split on the rest of the drive home. A third group, who hadn’t had the chance to go before, went to see Leavenworth.

Seattle YOE Leavenworth

“Kevin Hsu, John Williams, Ryan Druffel, and I went to see the Blue Angels,” Caroline said. “We got sushi after, and then we flew home.”

Why YOEs?

YOEs are an essential part of DMC’s great company culture and allow all the offices to come together and fulfill some of our Core Values – Have Fun and Share Information.

“Why I care so much about YOEs is because we are really big on sharing information, working in a collaborative team, relying on the people around you, and asking for help when needed,” Elizabeth said. “For me, that’s difficult if I don’t know someone – especially for a newer member of the team. [Asking questions] is just so much easier to do if you know somebody as a person, if you’ve gone on a hike, or if they like your dog. I’ve always been a person who attends other YOEs, but it’s fun to be able to return the favor a little bit, pay it forward, and plan one to keep that community aspect going. You’re not just asking someone technical questions. It’s more personal, and I like that a lot.”

While we had the opportunity to personally meet Elizabeth’s dog, I am not the only one who agrees that this YOE allowed us to grow more personal connections.

“I really like going on YOEs because, I feel like, every time I go, I get to connect with a coworker that I don’t normally see on a daily basis,” Aaron said. “Even people that I work with in the Chicago office that I see every day, you don’t get to see them in a non-work context until you get out on a YOE or something. It’s fun to connect and make friends.”

As a newer DMCer, Brian says this YOE proved to him what DMC’s company culture is like.

“I joined DMC in part because of their great culture,” Brian said. “I wanted to meet a bunch of people and immerse myself to see if it was worth it, and it definitely was. It’s cool that we’re at a place that promotes things like this, puts their money where their mouth is in terms of the great culture that they have, and [has] just a bunch of friendly people who made enough of a first impression on me that I will travel across the country to go hang out with them.”

Without a doubt, the second Seattle YOE was a fun, impactful, and memorable event!

“I think it was a great success and everyone had a fun time,” Michael said. “I can’t wait for when we do it next time.”

This year, DMC marked 25 years in business providing thousands of expert solutions to our clients. When the world began opening up again, it was time for us to celebrate! Learn how we recognized this milestone in our offices across the country.

Denver Office Party

This year's celebrations looked different for every DMC office. Some kept the party at home by throwing the event in the office. DMC Denver ordered catering to the office and had game night. They reminisced on "How Far We've Come" while toasting with beers and tasting whiskeys in true DMC Denver style.

Chicago Homecoming Celebration

DMC_25th_Anniversary_Party_Group_Photo_Chicago

In our headquarters located in Chicago, we decided to throw a Homecoming-themed anniversary party including a Spirit Week leading up to the party. We decorated the whole office with crepe paper streamers and balloons.

DMC_25th_Anniversary_Party_Group_Photo_Chicago_Next_to_Slide

In true homecoming fashion, we had a place to take posed pictures, a punch bowl, and plenty of snacks. We even had some four-legged friends in attendance to make the night a little more fun. It was wonderful to see each other again and to meet our newest coworkers who joined the team during our time working from home.

Anniversary Dinners

Other offices decided to take the team out for a lovely dinner. DMC Boston celebrated at a Japanese tapas-style restaurant in Cambridge. After the delicious three-course meal, the team ended their night with a few rounds of pool at a nearby arcade.

An Athletic Anniversary Party

Other teams hosted event outings to celebrate DMC's anniversary. Houston celebrated DMC's 25 years by marveling at the beauty and athleticism of acrobats at Cirque de Soleil.

Anniversary Olympics

Then there's DMC Seattle, who took party planning to a whole new level. DMC Seattle planned an entire evening of events with their Olympics-themed 25th Anniversary celebration!

Their events utilized a range of skills to showcase how diverse our DMC talent pool really is. There were the more typical events of pool or ping pong, but the more interesting events happened later on in the day. We might not know who can code the fastest in the office, but now we do know who can type the fastest, thanks to the typeracer competition.

The DMC Olympics gave a bit of a different flare to the game of hockey. Instead of a hockey stick, they used a pool cue. Instead of a puck, they used a taped wire spool. Instead of other hockey opponents, there were more wire spools. Ok, maybe this was less like hockey and more of a silly obstacle course, but it was very entertaining.

To test the team's face flexibility and dexterity, they had an Oreo eating competition that determined who was the fastest to get an Oreo from their forehead into their mouth without using their hands. Closing out the evening, no Olympics would be complete without an awards ceremony and presentation of metals.

We've had 25 years of expert solutions and look forward to many more. Thank you for being part of it!

When we moved to working from home, that didn't mean our teams stopped hanging out together outside of working hours. Before the pandemic, DMC offered employees a monthly budget called the Activity Fund that could be used on events for team bonding, and we continued to use it even when working remotely. We became well versed in planning virtual events: we made pizzas, critiqued wine, carved pumpkins, and even crafted together.

While Activity Fund Events have traditionally been for bonding with your local office, when everything became virtual we were able to hang out with DMCers from offices across the country. This allowed us to experience events planned altogether highlighting each office's unique set of personalities.

One event, in particular, was our June’s Whiskey Tasting. While many of our offices have whiskey enthusiasts, our resident spirit-tasting expert is John Sullivan of DMC Denver. During the pandemic, John went from just being a whiskey connoisseur to becoming the host of multiple virtual tastings. If you think his engineering projects are expertly managed and executed, just wait until you hear about his whiskey tasting experiences. This guy does not spare any detail.

The Pitch

Months in advance, the game plan was laid out. First came the idea pitch. Sullivan’s subtle post in Slack asked if anyone would want to do a mystery whiskey tasting. Obviously, there was a lot of interest. Who doesn’t want to learn more about whiskeys and have a tasting in the comfort of your own home?

The Logistics

Once we had a gauge of the interest and the number of participants from each office, we were able to fine-tune the logistics. The tasting would consist of four whiskeys. With DMC spread across the country, we needed to figure out which interesting whiskeys were available near each office. A private Slack channel and subsequential spreadsheet were created to track the process of researching local liquor stores and delivery services. We wanted to make sure we could have consistent tasting across all offices.

Once the four whiskeys were located and decided upon, next was the act of distributing them among the tasters. This was going to be a blind tasting, so consistent anonymity was important. We found the perfect 2oz bottles and a brilliant labeling system. It got a little touch and go when Amazon ran out of the bottles we wanted, but because of our expert solutions and planning, we were able to get enough bottles to each office's event coordinator.

A Family Affair

Once we had the whiskeys in their individual portions, we needed a way to differentiate the bottles. One might think that labeling the bottles one to four would be enough, but not for our team. We crowdsourced for alternative names. While our engineers' creativity was wonderful with the naming process, the show's real star was our honorary five-year-old artist Scarlett, Sullivan’s daughter.

The DMC Whiskey Tasting really became a family event when John commissioned her to create the custom labels for each bottle.

For every DMC event, DMCers are allowed to invite a +1 so that friends, family, and significant others can join in on the fun too. In this case, they even jumped in to help with the logistics. We had someone’s significant other put together a tasting menu to coincide with each mystery bottle for this event. Emily Marlatt, Project Accounting Lead, then took those tasting notes in addition to Scarlett’s drawings and made a tasting guide.

The Method of Tasting

June 22 was the day it all came together. DMCers from across the country called in via Zoom, ready to experience the tasting that had been months in the making. As the master of ceremony, Sullivan opened the call with a reminder of the proper tasting etiquette and a description of the first whiskey.

Our tasting will go like this:

  1. Pour a small amount and drink a few sips neat.
  2. Add a few drops of water with the straw and finish the glass.
  3. Pour a small amount and add an ice cube.
  4. Drink the rest your favorite way!

A few notes while tasting:

  1. When smelling it, put your nose over the glass and breath in through your mouth.  If you sniff like you would a wine the alcohol overpowers the smell.
  2. For sure try to pour small amounts when you taste the different ways so you can drink most of it in your favorite way.
  3. Try to have a few snacks around if your office didn’t supply you any specific ones.

The Tasting

During the tasting, tasters went into Zoom breakout rooms to drink, discuss, and enjoy the evening experiencing the whiskeys with others.  It is events like this that show off the personalities that makeup DMC. We work together to bring our customers quality solutions while also creating quality experiences for and with each other.

After working from home throughout the pandemic, DMC transitioned to an "optional work from the office" status on June 1. This interim phase allows team members who want to come back to the office to do so safely.

We are so excited for the opportunity to be back in our eight offices and to see some friendly faces in person! Here's how we have prepared to return to our offices and how we've been safely socializing.

Preparing to Reopen the Office

Our offices needed a deep clean after we spent over a year away from our desks while working remotely during the pandemic. In addition to the year worth of dust that had accumulated in the office, there was also an assortment of items stacked up on people's desks that sat unused. We decided to donate these items that weren't used in a year and had a designated "yard sale" area where people could drop off unneeded items for donation.

We continue to encourage donations as more DMCers come back to the office.

As part of our deep clean, we tackled the office refrigerators. To make things interesting, we held a contest among each of our offices to see who had the most expired foods in their fridges. The Houston office had a container of Nestle Milo that expired in August 2018!

In addition to cleaning up the offices, we prepared to welcome new employees and wanted to ensure they felt comfortable at their new desks in the office. Brian Nolan, our Infrastructure Specialist on the IT team, worked with vendors a month before our offices' reopening date to get everyone the equipment they needed for their successful transition to the office.

Welcome Back Week

Welcome to DMC DallasDMC Dallas welcomes others back to their office.

To welcome our team members back in person, we held a series of fun events both in and outside of our offices.

In Chicago, we celebrated with a visit from the Big Star taco truck in our parking lot on "Taco Tuesday!" After updating our rooftop deck with a fresh stain, we also enjoyed a BBQ cookout with views of the Chicago skyline. During this week, team members additionally visited the "Welcome Wagon" stocked with cleaning products, mousepads, cables, and anything else needed to set up their desks. We also battled on the nearby Whirlyball court!Whirlyball DMC Chicago Team

The Houston team celebrated with a sushi-making party, a visit to Cidercade, and a dinner and wine bar night. Sushi Making DMC Houston Team

Our Boston team had a great time reconnecting over bowling, rock climbing, taco tasting, and celebrating pie day.DMC Boston team goes bowling

In Dallas, the team enjoyed a Whirlyball outing and an evening of CidercadeCidercade DMC Dallas Team

The New York team held a low-key picnic in the park so that their newest addition baby Noa could join in on the fun!Low-key Picnic DMC New York Team

In St. Louis, the team hung out and watched the women's U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team Trials together. Olympic Qualifiers DMC St. Louis Team

Our Seattle team headed out of the office and out on the water for a scenic boat cruise and also had a "good old-fashioned office game night," according to Elizabeth Goodnight, Systems Engineer. Boat cruise DMC Seattle Team

In Denver, the team enjoyed a game night in the office as well as an evening of axe throwing (not in the office!).Axe Throwing DMC Denver Team

All in all, it's been wonderful to reunite with our colleagues in person at our offices around the country. We’re happy to be offering expert solutions directly from our office locations again as we return to working in person!
