Across all our U.S. offices, our teams keep proving that “work hard, play hard” isn’t just a slogan — it’s practically an engineering principle.

At DMC, we take our culture and team-building opportunities as seriously as our Control Systems.

DMC Denver recently hosted a spirited Welcome Party for our new engineers, Eliana Storkamp and Noam Ayalon, where we learned how to make craft cocktails! The results were positively shaken (not stirred) with an experienced chef teaching us how to make a couple of drinks with a seasonal Halloween-ish theme. We even held a friendly competition for the best bartender in the group!

“The mixologist who came in to teach the cocktail class was very entertaining, and the drinks we made were really fun and tasty,” stated new hire Eliana Storkamp. “I really loved making the Witches Brew Martini and muddling blackberries.”

“The welcome party was a blast! The pizza was great, and the cocktails were excellent—that pumpkin old-fashioned was a definite standout,” commented Noam Ayalon. “After most people left, a few of us stayed to play cutthroat pool. The game went on forever because people kept ‘tactical scratching’ to bring back eliminated players, which was hilarious.”

All in all, the Denver office genuinely had a great night full of food, cocktails, unexpected friendships, and the most dramatic pool game in office history.

The secret to DMC’s magic is a steady mix of collaboration and joy. Whether through cocktail crafting, escape rooms, or mountain hikes, we engineer not just solutions but community.

This Fall, the Houston team at DMC had the pleasure of welcoming Davis Robeson, who joined as an Experienced Engineer. To celebrate Davis becoming part of the team, we hosted a welcome party that was anything but ordinary—it was full of laughter, friendly competition, and game show excitement!

We gathered at Game Show Studio, a unique venue that transforms guests into contestants on spin-offs of popular TV game shows. From the moment the team walked in, the energy was electric. Bright lights, big hats, loud buzzers, and a stage set up just like the shows the team watches on TV made everyone feel like the game show contestant they always dreamed of being.

The Houston team split into groups and competed in a series of challenges inspired by classic game shows. There were trivia rounds that tested the team’s knowledge, fast-paced buzzer games that kept everyone on their toes, and even some hilarious challenges that had the whole team cheering.

Highlights of the Night

  • Celebrating Davis: Davis jumped right in and showed off his competitive side, making the event even more memorable. It was great to see him and his wife connect with the team in such a fun setting.
  • Big Hats: The props closet at the Game Studio was top-notch. Everyone was able to pick accessories (including giant cowboy hats, disco ball helmets, and tricorn hats) that fit their personality!
  • Laughs and Surprises: Some of the questions and challenges led to unexpected answers and funny moments that we’ll be talking about for weeks.

“It was quite fun working together as a team to come up with answers,” Davis shared. “The games were spin-offs of popular game shows like Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, and Family Feud. Before we could even start playing, everyone had to select a costume to wear for the duration of the competition. The costumes alone were well worth the laughs we got out of one another, especially when we were trying to come up with serious answers. I appreciated that we all leaned into the ridiculous nature of the event and absolutely made the most of it. At the end, DMC brought home the win!”

Why We Celebrate

At DMC, we believe that building strong relationships within our team leads to us delivering exceptional solutions to our customers. Events like this give the team the chance to relax, have fun, and strengthen the bonds that make our workplace collaborative and enjoyable.

We’re thrilled to have Davis on board and can’t wait to see the impact he’ll make as part of the Houston team.

For the last several years, DMC’s Test & Measurement Team has put their artistic skills to the test to celebrate the holiday season with the LabVIEW Icon Editor. LabVIEW’s Icon Editor is typically used to document code, but we’ve found that the 32×32-pixel icons make great ornaments for a tree.

The activity starts with development: using LabVIEW, MS Paint, and our own creativity, we all create ornament designs that inspire us for the year. We then print them, laminate them, and hole-punch just like any paper ornament before the best part: hanging them on the tree!

Creating LabVIEW Ornaments
DMC LabVIEW Ornament tree

The activity is a team effort, as after several years of festive ornaments, we must be selective about what makes the tree each year. This year, themes like AI, LabVIEW package managers, and our ongoing NASA project felt particularly topical to keep on the tree, as well as some classic LabVIEW icons and the Top Level at the top of the tree. If you want to check out some of the prior years’ events, you can find them here and here!

Creating LabVIEW Ornaments

One of DMC’s core values is Have Fun, and we’ve found that our ornament tradition helps us do just that. It’s a great way to refresh your focus with some creativity and come together as a team to make something we can enjoy for the rest of the holiday season.

Celebrating the Season as an NI Platinum Partner

Our ornament tradition is also a reminder of how closely we work with NI technologies throughout the year. DMC is proud to be one of NI’s highest-ranked partners worldwide and the exclusive Platinum-level partner in the Americas. Since 1997, our teams have partnered with NI to deliver complete instrumentation, measurement, and automated test solutions for clients across a wide range of industries.

The same LabVIEW tools that spark our creativity during the holidays are the foundation of the work we do every day. Our engineers bring deep knowledge of NI products to projects involving LabVIEW programming, automated test equipment, real-time and FPGA development, and more. This expertise helps us design solutions that are consistent, scalable, and built for long-term success. Visit our NI partner page to learn more about our expertise.

Earlier this year, DMC welcomed members of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) from three Chicago-area universities for a one-day externship. Eight students from the University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign joined us over their winter breaks to explore DMC’s services, culture, and approach to engineering consulting.

DMC SWE Externship

The day began with a guided tour of DMC’s Chicago headquarters, where students visited each service area to hear directly from team members about their work, tools, clients, and favorite projects. The group also toured DMC’s fabrication studio to observe how custom control panels are designed and assembled, gaining insight into the hands-on manufacturing processes that support DMC’s automation solutions.

To give students meaningful technical exposure, DMC’s two largest service areas, Automation & Manufacturing Intelligence (Automation) and Test & Measurement Automation (T&M), each led an immersive lab experience modeled after real client projects. These activities showcased the distinct tools and workflows used by DMC engineers across disciplines. In the Automation lab, students worked with Siemens’ TIA Portal to program a PLC in Ladder Logic, designing and commissioning a two-way stoplight control system. The exercise reflected the complete project lifecycle followed by DMC automation engineers, from system design and code development to hardware integration and testing. Several externs described this activity as a highlight of the day, sharing that “I thought the activity was very engaging and fun, and I learned a lot about how PLCs work, ladder logic, and the process of problem-solving as a team.”

In the T&M lab, students were introduced to test automation and data acquisition tools that support DMC’s verification and validation projects. Using a NI cDAQ and LabVIEW with NI MAX, participants investigated a simulated stoplight malfunction, analyzed the system’s behavior, and identified the software as the source of the issue. Guided by DMC engineers, they implemented and verified code updates to restore proper function, gaining hands-on insight into DMC’s problem-solving process and collaborative engineering approach. One participant commented, “I liked the detective work and figuring out which lights corresponded to which outputs. The logic aspect was really fun—it felt like a puzzle to determine which output should connect to which light when we clicked the red or green light.”

Following the lab sessions, externs had the opportunity to connect with some of the women engineers at DMC over lunch for an open discussion about professional growth and experiences as women in STEM. These conversations provided valuable insight into the diverse career paths within engineering and fostered meaningful mentorship connections.

The afternoon continued with project highlights from DMC’s various service areas, including Automation & Manufacturing Intelligence, Application Development, Embedded Systems, and Test & Measurement Automation, showcasing the breadth of technical expertise across the company. One extern shared that they “loved seeing how DMC works on everything from large automatic overhead track systems to internal projects to test and measurement systems for the Artemis boosters,” adding that “each project was presented in a very engaging way.”

The event wrapped up with a Q&A session with DMC’s CEO, Frank Riordan, who shared his perspective on leadership, company culture, and the evolving engineering industry. Students were encouraged to ask questions about his career journey and the challenges and rewards of leading a growing engineering firm. One student shared, “I loved being able to meet Frank and hear his experience starting DMC and what direction he sees for the company in the future. I liked how open the Q&A session was, rather than a lecture.”

The externship was an engaging and rewarding experience for both the visiting students and DMC engineers. We were thrilled to share our work and culture with the next generation of engineers and look forward to hosting similar events in the future to continue connecting with emerging STEM talent.

DMC Chicago recently stormed Medieval Times for an action-packed social outing. Located in nearby Schaumburg, Medieval Times has been a popular DMC activity in the past, and I thought it was time to return. Each office has a monthly activity fund budget for social events, so I was thrilled to “make it happen” (as our core value says). We went back in time together for an evening of jousting, royal thrills, and cheering on our knight.

King and queen in medieval costumes

Inside the Castle

This proved to be a popular event, with DMC’s royal entourage including 60 team members, families, and guests. We all entered the Medieval Times castle and stepped back in time to the 11th century.

Those who arrived early had the opportunity to check out the castle, including a medieval torture device museum. While historians have since proved many “common” devices were not historically accurate, it was morbidly fascinating either way. Those without the taste for the macabre had the chance to check out the horses in their stable and see the care the Medieval Times team puts into their equine employees.

Knights on horseback in an arena

Tales from the Tournament

The main event had something for everyone to enjoy. Wearing paper crowns on our heads, we cheered on our knight in between feasting on turkey legs or “dragon blood” (tomato soup). Sparks flew and lances broke as knights clashed swords in combat. A falcon soared over the crowd. The athleticism of the performers and their horses impressed everyone in attendance. As someone who grew up riding horses, I had a blast admiring the horsemanship.

Our team embodied another core value, “have fun,” all night at Medieval Times. In addition to working hard together in the office, it was a great reminder to let loose as a team for a few hours of fanfare, sword fights, and teambuilding. As a bonus, our knight even won the tournament!

This summer, DMC New York decided to beat the heat with a sunset sail around the New York Harbor. We held a Slack poll of summer activities to decide how to utilize the activity fund, the monthly social event budget for each DMC office. We decided to leave the sweltering city behind for a few hours for live jazz and iconic NYC views aboard a sailboat together.

Smooth Sailing Ahead

On the evening of our cruise, eight of us took the subway together from our office down to one of the piers on the west side of Manhattan. We climbed aboard a grand, 158-foot-long ship with Manhattan by Sail and settled into our spots on deck with a drink.

In addition to the sound of the breeze and distant city noises, a live jazz performance was the soundtrack of our evening. The peaceful atmosphere was the perfect way to admire the impressive city skyline from the water.

A Sailor’s Life

The team agreed that seeing the Manhattan skyline from the water was the highlight of the evening. It was unique to see the views looking uptown from the harbor. It was incredible admiring landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governors Island, and the city’s bridges from this impressive perspective. The summer sunset glowing on the water only added to the impressive views.

Our sailing experience was more than just pretty views; we got hands-on experience. The crew allowed passengers to hoist the square-rigged ship sails on the 120-foot-tall masts, and a few of us jumped at the opportunity. When we weren’t raising the sails, we were able to roam the deck and explore new views from every angle.

Our team took turns raising the sails and pointing out NYC landmarks from the sailboat. The fun experience sparked conversations about other New York Harbor adventures we could plan in future summers. In addition to embodying our core value, “Have Fun,” our memorable cruise inspired us with new perspectives and even some sailing skills.
